SOUTH WINDSOR – The Rev. Virginia R. (Roger) Black, 90, of South Windsor, one of the United Church of Christ's first female ordained ministers to serve as an Intentional Interim Minister, died Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Brookdale South Windsor after a long illness.
The Rev. Black was born in Waterbury, Sept. 20, 1926, daughter of the late David and Marion (Hill) Roger. She was raised and educated and lived most of her life in the Watertown area. She was a graduate of UConn and received her Masters of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey.
In addition to serving as the interim minister for many churches in the mid-Atlantic area, she served as the executive director of the Interim Ministry Network in Baltimore, Md. She retired to Storrs, where she remained active in the Storrs Congregational Church.
The Rev. Black enjoyed genealogy and music. She also loved to travel and was especially fond of Scotland.
The Rev. Black is survived by three sons, Larry Black (Jay), of Watertown, Ron Black, of Woodbury and Reid Black (Leslie), of Watertown; a daughter, Kim Black (Peter Nyberg), of Coventry; a sister, Priscilla Reynolds, of Wallingford; four grandchildren, Christopher Black, Stephen Black, Rachael Black and Nathan Black; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents, Rev. Black was predeceased by her son, Keith Black; her brother, Everett Roger; her sister, Nancy Loomis; and her former husband, Frederick Black.
The Rev. Black’s family would like to thank the staff of Brookdale South Windsor, especially Larry and his team in Clare Bridge, for their care and compassion.
A memorial service for The Rev. Black will be celebrated Saturday, August 19, 2017, 1 PM, at Storrs Congregational Church, 5 North Eagleville Road, Storrs. Those attending are asked to refer to storrscongchurch.org for parking instructions. Burial is private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Arrangements have been entrusted to Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St., Watertown.
