Vardell was born in Pembroke, North Carolina. Called to the ministry at an early age, Vardell served United Church of Christ congregations in Kingston, Binghamton and Honeoye, NY. In 1970 he was called to pastor the Terryville Congregational Church in Terryville, CT where he served for 23 years.
