The Rev. Mr. Serge F. Hummon

The Rev. Mr. Serge Floyd Hummon passed away in his sleep at the age of 99, on December 29, 2016 in Holden, Massachusetts.  He is survived by his son David; his daughters-in-law, Kathleen and Mary; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Doris Taylor Hummon, and his son, Norman Hummon.

Raised on farms in Michigan and Ohio, he graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 1939, and completed his graduate education at Union Seminary in New York and Chicago Theological Seminary.  He was ordained in 1945 as a Congregational Christian minister and served rural churches in Michigan and Wisconsin before joining the Congregational Conference staff in Wisconsin. For most of his career, he worked nationally for the United Church of Christ's Board for Homeland Ministries, where he was well know for specializing in the rural church and ministry to Native American communities. Outgoing and democratic, Serge engaged people from all backgrounds, and was cherished for his warmth, good sense, and love of humanity. After retiring, he and his beloved wife, Doris moved to Peacham, Vermont.

A memorial service was held at Follen Community Church, Lexington, Massachusetts on Saturday, January 7, 2017. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Church of Christ Annual Fund (UCC.org).
