The Rev. Mr. Herbert I. Schumm passed away on Wednesday, February 14, 2018 surrounded by his family.
He is survived by his three children, L. Philip Schumm, Hannelore C. Nalesnik and Anneliese E. Pimenta, and six grandchildren.
Herb recieved a BA from Anderson College and additional courses at Butler University and Garrett Biblical Institute. He was ordained as a minister on August 14, 1951. He started as a student pastor at Congregational Christian Church in Warren, IN from 1957-1960. In 1962, he received his Master of Divinity Degree from Andover Newton Theological Seminary. He was pastor of the First Congregational Church in East Derry serving from 1962-1967. He then continued his studies at ANTS receiving his Master of Theology in 1966. In 1968 he was called to Trinitarian Congregational Church in North Andover. where he pastored for 29 years retiring as Pastor Emeritus.
During his ministry in North Andover, Herb developed a Nursing Home Ministry in which he regularly held services at nursing homes throughout the Greater Merrimack Valley. He was also president, secretary, and an incorporating member of the Greater Lawrence Ecumenical Area Ministry (GLEAM) program. Additionally, he served as president for the Greater Lawrence Council of Churches. From 1964-1967 he was the summer youth camp director for the NH Conference of the UCC, and served on several committees for the Massachusetts Conference. In the early 1980's, he hosted four high school educational tours to Europe and in both 1981 and 1984, he was the leader for two seminar trips to the Holy Land. Before he retired he was a founding board member of the Edgewood Retirement Community in North Andover.
Calling hours will be at Conte Funeral Home in North Andover, MA on Wednesday, February 21st from 4:00 to 8:00 pm and on Thursday, February 22nd from 4:00 to 6:00pm. The funeral will be at Trinitarian Congregational Church in North Andover, MA on Friday, February 23rd at 10:00am. In lieu of flowers, Herb asked that donations be made to a church of one's choosing.
