The Rev. Dr. Gary W. Smothers, passed away on April 1, 2016 at the age of 81.  Born in Iowa, Rev. Smothers was raised in the small town of McGregor. He graduated from the University of Dubuque, Iowa, where he met and married his wife, Delores (Dee) Kubatzke.  They were married for 60 years when Dee passed away in August 2015.  He earned his masters and doctoral degrees from Andover Newton Theological School.  After serving at churches in Iowa, Missouri, and Illinois, Gary was called to Winthrop Congregational Church in Holbrook, MA.  He was pastor there for 30 years and for the last decade he was accompanied by his wife Dee as church organist.  After retiring from Winthrop and full-time work, Gary went on to serve as associate minister at Bethany Congregational Church for 10 years.  He was passionate in the ministry and felt blessed that he had been called to be part of both congregations.

A funeral service was held at Bethany Congregational Church, Quincy MA on April 5, 2016.  Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made in his name to either the Winthrop Congregational Church, 16 N. Franklin St., Holbrook, Ma 02343, or Bethany Congregational Church, 18 Spear St., Quincy, MA 02169.
