The Rev. Mark F. Strickland

The Rev. Mark F. Strickland

Passed on Wednesday, 10 March 2021
The Rev. Mark F. Strickland died at home in West Falmouth on  March 10, 2021 after a courageous journey with Alzheimer’s Disease.  Mark is survived by his wife of 48 years, the Rev. Nancy Wilkins Strickland, his daughter Alison Parker Strickland Meadows and her husband Wayne Meadows of Westford, MA, and his son Matthew Scott Strickland and wife Allison Murphy Strickland of Falmouth, MA.  He is also survived by grandchildren Caitlin, Hailey, and Austin Meadows, and Oliver, Violet, and Lulu Strickland.

He was born in Natick, MA to the Rev. Mark and Alice Mason Strickland. He graduated from Manchester Central High School and  New England College in Henniker N.H. Mark answered  the call to ministry following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, and graduated from Hartford Seminary.  He was ordained in the United Church of Christ (UCC) in 1958.  Mark served Massachusetts UCC churches in Andover, Melrose, Arlington, and Lynnfield. His longest pastorate was at Centre Church, Lynnfield, where upon retirement he was given the honor of Pastor Emeritus. He was sought after for his powerful preaching and commanding presence in the pulpit. He comforted and gently shepherded many people in his life.

Mark was known for his gracious warm smile and his firm handshake. The message of love, compassion, and integrity of the Christian Gospel was imbued in him from an early age.  He was interested in people of all ages and learned to ski so that he could keep up with the high school youth group at Melrose Highlands Congregational Church. Love of the ocean and sailing brought Mark to West Falmouth, MA. He and his wife enjoyed many summers in West Falmouth before they renovated their summer home to accommodate year- round living. The focus of summer was always sailing their boat, to various destinations, especially the Vineyard and Cuttyhunk. Mark was a natural sailor and knew currents and tides well thanks to his pocket Eldridge guide. He also had the good sense to return to the mooring when his wife felt the winds were a bit brisk. Mark was a truly good soul, and leaves an impressive good legacy, a good mark on the world.

Contributions in Mark’s memory may be made to the Kendrick/Remick/Siladi Fund for Generosity and Faith Development of the Southern New England Conference UCC at sneucc.org. Private family graveside services will be held, and a memorial service at First Congregational Church, UCC in Falmouth at a later date.
