He was born in Norwich, CT a son of Frank Herbert and Bertha (Montgomery) Wilcox of Pachaug. Mr. Wilcox enlisted in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1970 at the Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory in New London, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He served onboard Destroyers in the Atlantic Fleet; at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard; and at several research and development facilities. He received the degree BSEE at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, CA, in 1965. Following retirement, he served as a senior engineer at the Navy Underwater Sound Laboratory for six years. Mr. Wilcox received the degree Master of Divinity from Andover Newton Theological School in Newton, MA, and was ordained into the Christian ministry at the Federated Church of Christ UCC in Brooklyn, CT in 1980. He served churches in Connecticut and Kansas, leaving active ministry in 1991. For twelve years, Mr. Wilcox served as Office Manager for NAPA stores in Brooklyn, Willimantic and Plainfield. He also served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the town of Brooklyn for several years.
A memorial service will be held at the Federated Church of Christ UCC at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in John’s honor to the Federated Church of Christ UCC, PO Box 204 Brooklyn, CT 06234.
