The Rev. Edward R. Mayes

Passed on Sunday, 04 September 2022

The Rev. Edward R. Mayes died at home on Sunday September 4, 2022 at his home in West Hartford after extended hospice care.  He is survived by his wife Marlene Goldkamp Mayes, Jonathan and Amanda Mayes of Middlebury, Timothy Mayes of West Hartford, Ben and Mary Mayes of Lebanon, NH, and Rebecca and Dr. Jeffrey Goldberg of Burlington, CT. He also leaves seven grandchildren; Tristan, D’artangan, Noah, Trevor, Leah, Kate and Madeline, who are all joyous reflections of his heart.

Ed was born in New Britain to Anne and Edward Mayes. He attended New Britain Public Schools, Westminster, and Vanderbilt University. During his academic endeavors, Ed served in the army and was stationed in Germany, which was pivotal in his choosing to further his education at Hartford Seminary, where he received a Masters of Divinity in 1965. He was ordained in 1968 in Randolph Center Vermont. Ed brought humor, love, music, and a sense of adventure to his congregation. Rev. Mayes first pastored at the Flagg Road Church with his wife Marlene and very young children Jon, Tim, Ben, and Rebecca, in 1971.  He served Flagg Road for 30 years before retiring in 2001. Interim positions followed in various Connecticut churches culminating with the Somersville Congregational Church in 2007.

Ed loved sharing his understanding of the Spirit through openness and compassion, and always through stories. For the last several years, he has spent many happy hours working in the gardens and greenhouse at the 4H Education Center at Auerfarm in Bloomfield.

His memorial service is scheduled for 2:30pm Saturday, September 10, 2022 at the Flagg Road United Church of Christ, 134 Flagg Road, West Hartford, CT.   In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Flagg Road UCC or the 4H Educational Center at Auerfarm in Bloomfield, CT.
