The Rev. Dr. William T. Scott, Jr

Passed on Sunday, 27 January 2019
This obituary was submitted by The Rev. Susan C. Scott.

The Rev. Dr. William T. Scott, Jr. died suddenly at his home in Avondale, PA. on Sunday, January 27th. He was just a month and a day shy of turning 75, and died on he and his wife's 29th wedding anniversary.
Bill was a 1967 graduate of Olivet College in Economics. He went directly to Andover Newton Theological Seminary, completing his Bachelor of Divinity in 1970. Bill’s first pastorate was at Christ Reformed Church in Alexandria, PA from 1970-1974. He went on to serve two other churches, first the Somersville Congregational Church in Connecticut (1974-76) and then the United Church of Ware in Massachusetts (1997-1982). While at the church in Ware, he simultaneously earned his D. Min in Psychology and Clinical Studies again at Andover Newton Theological School. Bill became a certified chaplain educator with the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. Beginning in 1982, Bill ministered as chaplain and chaplain educator, first at the The Williamsport Hospital in Pennsylvania (1982-1990) and then at The Stamford Hospital in Connecticut (1990-1992). He served on the Church and Ministry Committee for the New Haven Association from 2000-2002. While at The Stamford Hospital he did part-time volunteer duty with the American Red Cross as a spiritual responder to airplane disasters, including Egypt Air, the 9/11 event, and the airplane crash in the Rockaways section of New York. Bill was well-equipped for this given that his ministry specialty in the hospital was the emergency room.
At the end of his career Bill trained military chaplains at the VA San Diego Health Care Center (CA). In the early years of retirement, he volunteered for the Senior Volunteer Sheriff Program Dept in San Diego County. He and his wife, Susan, moved back east a few years later, to be closer to family, and particularly to a new grand daughter who’d been born in SE Pennsylvania -- it was Bill's great joy in the last 5 years, to watch that little girl grow up.

Bill is survived by his wife (Rev.) Susan Scott, four beloved step-children, Carol Royer, Lucas Royer, Beth Royer, and Jacob Royer, and three delightful grand daughters, Rose Royer, Lily Royer, and Greta Bjorke. Bill was a New Englander through and through — loved his seafood and the BoSox! His interests included lighthouses, CB and Ham radio, the UConn Women’s basketball team, birding, and meteorology.
His memorial service will be held at the New Ark United Church of Christ in Newark, DE on Saturday, February 23, at 11 AM.  Memorial donations in Bill’s memory may be made to the Foundation for Clinical Pastoral Education whose internet link follows:
