The Rev. Dr. Guy L. Steele

The Rev. Dr. Guy L. Steele

Passed on Thursday, 11 January 2018
The Rev. Dr. Guy L. Steele died on January 11, 2018.   He was the devoted father of Guy L. Steele Jr. and his wife Barbara of Lexington, and David A. Steele and his wife Sandi of Leominster; cherished grandfather of Julia, Peter, and Matthew; and great-grandfather of Holly and Maya.

Guy was talented in many facets of life. In his early years he was an accomplished track athlete. As a man of devout faith he began his ministry as a student pastor in Montgomery City, Missouri, while studying for his Bachelor of Arts degree from University of Missouri, followed by a Bachelor of Divinity degree from Brite College of the Bible in Fort Worth, Texas. Guy trained at Perkins School for the Blind, Boston University School of Theology, and Brandeis University (graduate work in Sociology), then received his Master of Theology degree from Harvard University and his Doctor of Ministry degree from the Boston University School of Theology. Guy served as Pastor and Chaplain in many parts of our country, including 13 years as pastor of the Brighton Evangelical Congregational Church; was instrumental in building churches and establishing accreditation programs for Clinical Pastoral Education; and retired from New England Deaconess Hospital as the Director of Pastoral Care. He also served as an adjunct faculty member at the Harvard Divinity School.

Guy had a true passion for music. He took minimal lessons in his youth and was a mostly self taught trumpet player. Once established in his career he formed the Auburndale Brass quartet. In 1984, Guy conceived and founded the Longwood Symphony Orchestra, beginning as only a chamber orchestra but growing to 92 players and playing at the Hatch Shell within its first year. He also was a member of the Tri-County Concert Band and enjoyed many years of solo and swing band work. Guy enjoyed boating, being surrounded by family, and a good laugh. He could often be heard saying "I'm the richest man in the world" in all the ways in life that count.

A Celebration of Life Service was held at Linden Ponds Performing Arts Center, Derby Clubhouse, 300 Linden Ponds Way, Hingham, MA 02043, on Sunday, February 4, 2018 at 2 PM.
