The Rev. Dr. Melvin Eugene Davis (Gene) passed peacefully on September 21, 2012 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, surrounded by his loving family. Gene was born on August 21, 1925 in Parkersburg, West Virginia to Amanda and Emery Davis. Gene entered the United States Navy in February of 1944. He served in California and Norfolk, Virginia and was discharged in May of 1946. He entered Otterbein College in Ohio in the fall of 1946 where he met Ruth Eleanor Tomb (Tommie), and graduated in June of 1950. Gene and Tommie were married on August 1, 1953.
Gene received his Bachelor of Divinity from Bonebrake Theological Seminary in Ohio. He was ordained in August of 1954 and served churches in the West Virginia and Virginia until 1956. He then became the Director of Religious Activities at Springfield College in Massachusetts. While there, Gene received his Master's of Education in Guidance and Counseling. Gene then took a position as Director of the United Christian Fellowship at Bowling Green State University, in Ohio from 1959-1967. Gene then served the First Congregational Church of Burlington, Massachusetts from 1967-1977. He earned a Master's of Sacred Theology and Doctor of Ministry from Andover Newton Theological Seminary. In 1977, Gene was called to serve as pastor of Faith United Parish, in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. Gene retired in August of 1990. At that time, he and Tommie, moved to Bethany Village in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, where they have lived for the past 22 years.
Gene is survived by Tommie his wifeof 59 years, four children, Barbara Davis Gedeon, Robert Eugene Davis, Beth DavisMikesell and Beverly Davis Serozynski, 16 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Gene and Tommie enjoyed traveling and spending time with their family. When at home, Gene enjoyed reading, gardening and was involved in various committees at Bethany Village and volunteered countless hours over the years.
A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, September 23rd, at the Community Room, Bethany Village.
