Passed on Monday, 13 April 2015
The Rev. Dr. Donald E. Overlock, 80 of Craigville, MA and Longboat Key, FL, died April 13, 2015 surrounded by the family he so cherished. A voracious reader, ardent gardener and skilled theologian, he pursued a ministry in the Congregational Church (United Church of Christ) that spanned over 50 years, and found him mentoring pastors and birthing church starts across Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
Predeceased by his parents Everson and Edith (Thompson) Overlock and his older brother John (Lucille), he is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sally (Potter), his sons Marc (Wendolynn Kirkland) and Kevin (Nancy Rampolo), and his daughter Kristen (Anna Forkan), along with three grandchildren, Mackenzie, Matthew and Collin.
Don found school a great voyage of discovery and wonder, starting with Tatnuck Elementary School in Worcester (1948), followed by Classical High School (1952), and then wide ranging liberal arts and theological studies with degrees from Boston University, New York University, Andover Newton Theological Seminary and Assumption College.
Don served several Massachusetts congregational churches including New Bedford, where he was ordained, Greenfield, Peabody, Fitchburg and Melrose Highlands, before accepting a call to be the UCC's Associate Conference Minister in Western Massachusetts. He next accepted the Conference Minister position in Northeast Pennsylvania and served two six year terms. Cedar Crest College recognized his profound impact on the region by awarding him a Doctor of Humane Letters.
Don and Sally later retired to their beloved summer home in Craigville, Massachusetts.
A memorial service took place on Saturday July 25, 2015 at 2pm at the Tabernacle in the Craigville Village with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Christian Camp Meeting Association: Tabernacle Fund, 39 Prospect Ave ,Centerville, MA 02632.
