"I recently met with a congregation facing a problem common to many of our churches: 'How do we do year-round stewardship?'" said Andrew Warner, Generosity Officer for the United Church of Christ. "Research by the Lake Institute and others demonstrates the importance of teaching about generosity, not just when handing out pledge cards but all the time. Yet, many pastors only preach on giving annually, if at all."
Warner worked with Rev. Bruce Barkhauer of the Center for Faith and Giving (Disciples of Christ) to reimagine the national church's stewardship resources for local congregations. Past materials provided tools for a 4-5 weeklong campaign. The new materials are designed to be used year-round.
"The new materials – 'From Bread and Cup to Faith and Giving' – answer that need with a robust set of preaching and worship materials (exegesis on eight texts), small group lesson plans, children & youth materials, plus practical advice on how to talk about generosity during a pledge drive and throughout the year," he said. "Additionally, we've made the materials available now, instead of the regular summer launch."
“From Bread and Cup to Faith and Giving” makes the connection between our experience of God and our generosity as disciples. It includes practical tools such as logos, commitment cards, bulletin inserts, and letters. The materials also provide resources for preaching and teaching about stewardship throughout the year. Campaign guidance and calendars help leaders make the best use of these robust materials for their specific context and size.
The materials are available for purchase at ucc.org/stm2022.
