“The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the citizen among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.”
-Leviticus 19:34 NRSV

The Immigration, Refugee, and Asylum Task Team of the Southern New England Conference of the UCC has announced a small grant opportunity for UCC churches in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut that are working to sponsor refugee families and are helping them to resettle in the United States. This grant opportunity is initiated in response specifically to the resettlement of people from Afghanistan; however, it is open to congregations who are sponsoring refugees from any country.

"The benefits of the grant go beyond the receipt of the small amount of money that the congregation will receive; it is also meant to help the Conference connect all the congregations that are doing this great work so that we might pool our resources and further plan how we, as a Conference and as individual congregations, might help each other," said the Rev. Dawn Adams of the task team.

Awards will be made to all congregations that are or are planning to sponsor refugees within the next six months who make this application.

To apply, congregations will need to provide:
  1. The name of the congregation with a mailing address
  2. A contact person with a phone number and email
  3. The name of the agency that the congregation is working with
  4. A statement about who the congregation is sponsoring and whether it is a current sponsorship, or if the church is awaiting their arrival.
  5. If the church is awaiting their arrival, the date that they are expected (for the purposes of this grant, those expected within six months are eligible).
Apply here or submit above information by email to Karen Methot.

"Because our budget is not large, awards may be small, but know that along with money comes prayers, support, and hopefully, networking. We do ask that if you apply you also agree to send us a short paragraph about your experience six months out so that we can continue to let everyone in the conference know about this important work," said Adams, Pastor of the First Congregational Church in Brimfield, MA.

Applications are due no later than November 25, 2021.
Awards will be announced December 7, 2021.
