Conference Welcomes New Administrative Assistant

HARTFORD - The Connecticut Conference has a new administrative assistant on board who will be working with the regional ministers, the racial justice ministry team, and the financial ministries team.

Abby Charamut is a member of Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford, and has experience working in both the nonprofit and small business sectors. She is bilingual, speaking English and Spanish.

Charamut studied literature at the University of Vermont and after college worked for a nonprofit in Guayaquil, Ecuador, where she started and directed a scholarship and tutoring program for children ages K-12 grade. She is a board member and health committee chair of AUF, Inc., a non-profit organization partnering with community leaders in Guayaquil in housing, education and health initiatives.
Charamut has deep roots in the United Church of Christ in Connecticut: her father, Gary Smith, was the senior minister of the Branford Congregational Church for 25 years (and her mother was youth director), she attended many Silver Lake summer conferences growing up, and her sister,  Erica Thompson, was just installed as senior minister at Asylum Hill Congregational Church. She lives in Wethersfield, CT, with her spouse and two German Sheperds.

"I grew up in a UCC Church and I’ve seen first-hand the kind of transformational influence it can have on individuals, faith communities, and in the world," Charamut said. "I’m excited to offer my talents in service to the UCC as it continues its progressive ministries here in Connecticut and beyond."

Charamut works in the Hartford office 25 hours a week.
