Conference Launches Drive to Erase Medical Debt

Conference Launches Drive to Erase Medical Debt

The following letter was recently sent to churches in the Conference. More details and promotional materials will be available soon.

The Southern New England Conference has launched and with it is our commitment to living the love and justice of Jesus.  We want you to know that one of our first actions is to invite you and your congregation to make a difference in the lives of those saddled by medical debt in our region.

Medical debt carries with it many challenges beyond financial burden. Needed health care services can be cut off for patients having problems paying their medical bills. Additionally, medical debt causes people to cut back on some of the most important necessities including food and clothing.

To address this crisis, the United Church of Christ teamed up with the New York-based nonprofit, RIP Medical Debt (ripmedicaldebt.org). In October 2019 it was announced that 5,888 Chicago families had their collective $5.3 million in medical debt erased due to the generosity of The Leaders Network (a consortium of Baptist churches serving Chicago's west side neighborhoods) and several Chicago area UCC churches.

This debt abolishment targets those living at or below the poverty guidelines, people for whom there is no reasonable expectation that they would ever be able to recover alone. By joining the mission of RIP Medical Debt, we can help by locating, purchasing, and abolishing unpaid and unpayable medical debt of those in some of the neediest Southern New England communities; including Springfield, MA, Bridgeport and Hartford, CT, and Providence, RI.

Our new Southern New England Conference has a deep commitment to justice issues. We're asking you - as a local church pastor or chair of a mission or justice committee - to mark the birth of the Southern New England Conference with a church contribution. We want EVERY congregation in the newly formed Conference to participate.  Together we can make a huge difference in our neighbor’s lives.

With our goal of 100% participation, we are confident that the churches of the SNEUCC agree when we say that this is a philanthropic priority. Please join us by sharing the mission of RIP Medical Debt with your congregations and by making your gift to retire medical debt today. The deadline for contributions to this initiative is Friday, April 17 (The Friday following Easter).

Will you join us by committing 1% of your church’s total income to this critical initiative?

Congregations can submit donations online here, or mail gifts to one of the offices of the SNEUCC:  SNEUCC Framingham Office,  1 Badger Road, Framingham, MA 01702 or SNEC Hartford Office, 125 Sherman Street, Hartford, CT 06105. Please be sure to include a note that this is for the Retiring Medical Debt Initiative.  Individuals can donate online here.

In gratitude for your generosity and faithfulness,
