Churches encouraged to get ready, share plans, for 9/11 anniversary

Minister & President Jim Antal calls on churches engage with the 9/11 anniversary, and to take part in the Massachusetts Remembers interfaith event on the Hatch Shell in Boston,

The Commission on Ecumenism and Interfaith Relations has put together a list of resources for churches to use in their efforts to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

"The Commission hopes that your congregation will plan worship and programming that will advance interfaith understanding and reconciliation,"  said Polly Hamlen, chair of the Commission. "Given that so many people regard religion as intolerant, such worship and programming could provide your community with a new understanding of church."

The resources are designed to help churches shape their worship service and plan other community activities. Recognizing that for many churches this is “homecoming” Sunday, the Commission has identified themes that can serve both objectives.  The resources are available at:

9/11 buttonsThe Conference is also inviting churches to post what they or their communities are planning to do on the Conference website's 9/11 Commemoration Page, so that information can be shared with the rest of the Conference.

At the Massachusetts Conference's Annual Meeting last month, Conference Minister and President Jim Antal spoke on behalf of the Mass Conference’s Ecumenism Commission when he called on delegates "to commit to being 4 for 4 as we commemorate the anniversary of 9-11." Those 4 action points are:

  • Engage in a daily prayer discipline focusing on peace and reconciliation across faith boundaries;
  • Read a book focusing on Islam, peace-building, and reconciliation between Christianity and Islam;
  • Initiate a relationship with a local interfaith neighbor. This could include developing a personal friendship or extending an invitation to a local mosque or Islamic leader to visit your congregation;
  • Participate/design a worship service for peace post-9-11
