MILFORD (01/06/2016) -- The United Church of Christ in Devon has kept its doors open for all for over 100 years. Recently, a deaf woman who attended the church as a child returned to worship with them. She wants to attend the services of the church, but her communication is American Sign Language (ASL). Immediately, Devon pastor the Rev. Karl Duetzmann began working out how to provide the best support for her to get the most out of Sunday worship services.

Through his work in the city, Duetzmann sought funding for an ASL interpreter through the CT Concerned Citizens for People with Disabilities, a local non-profit advocacy group in Milford. Their mission is helping others and improving lives through assistance, awareness, and compassion for people with disabilities. As a 501 C3 non-profit organization, they seek out charitable donations to support their work.

The congregation in Devon is pleased to announce that they have received a grant from the CT Concerned Citizens for People with Disabilities that will pay for an ASL interpreter once a month during the coming year. The church also secured the services of a qualified ASL interpreter. During the worship service on December 13th, representatives from the advocacy group presented a check to church council president Jean Klink and the church's pastor.

The doors, hearts and minds of the Devon church are open for any and all deaf or hard of hearing individuals and families to join us at these ASL interpreted services. ASL interpreted faith-based services for churches are not common. UCC Devon extends this welcome and would truly love to have others join their Sunday Services. The church hopes to be able to secure additional funding to extend and sustain this outreach for the deaf community. On January 3rd, the church held the first of its monthly ASL interpreted services.
