More than 6,000 people have died and 10,000 injured in Nepal from a major 7.8 earthquake which struck April 25 causing significant damage and destruction in Kathmandu and surrounding areas. Dozens were also killed in India and China. It is expected that the death toll will continue to rise as many poorly constructed buildings collapsed in heavily populated areas.

While search and rescue operations are underway. reports indicate the need for additional rescue crews, food, water, medical supplies and shelter. Information is limited due to damaged communications infrastructure and impacted humanitarian staff and officials.

UCC Disaster Ministries, using funds contributed to the One Great Hour of Sharing offering, will be supporting ACT Alliance partners in immediate response and recovery and is asking individuals to be in prayer for survivors and relief workers. Access UCC updates on the situation in Nepal here.

Those who would like to donate to relief efforts in Nepal may give securely on-line to the UCC International Emergency Relief Fund.  Designate your gift "Nepal relief". If you prefer to donate by mail, make checks payable to International Emergency Relief Fund. Mail to: United Church of Christ c/o Financial Services office, 700 Prospect Ave., Cleveland OH 44115.
