Take Action: Urge Your Governor to Declare Welcome to Refugees

Take Action: Urge Your Governor to Declare Welcome to Refugees

From Church World Service.

On September 26, the White House issued an Executive Order (EO 13888) that could end the resettlement of refugees in 16 states, including Connecticut and Rhode Island.  The EO is already creating chaos and confusion about where refugees can be resettled, and it will lead to family separation for refugee families.

Governors and local officials must provide written consent to allow refugee resettlement to continue in their states and communities.

As people who care about refugees, we need everyone in these states to urge your Governor to provide written consent to resettle refugees - and share publicly why they are providing consent. If consent is not provided by January, resettlement could grind to a halt in your state and community. Contact your governor at the numbers below:
  • Connecticut
    • Governor Ned Lamont: 800/406-1527
  • Rhode Island
    • Governor Gina Raimondo: 401/222-2080

Sample Script: “I’m your constituent from [TOWN], and I urge you to provide written consent to continue refugee resettlement in [STATE]. The administration issued Executive Order 13888 that requires governors and local officials to provide written consent in order to continue resettling refugees in those communities. I urge you to provide written consent before January and share in a public statement why [STATE] will continue welcoming refugees. Resettlement is a core American legacy that allows refugees to rebuild their lives. Our community welcomes refugees, and I urge you to do the same.”

Please note: If your state is not listed, do not call your governor - instead, please contact Elissa Diaz at ediaz@cwsglobal.org to learn how to help. There are contextualized strategies for each state that we want to be aware of.

Disclaimer: We do not endorse or agree with the Executive Order. Communication about, or participation in, the implementation of Executive Order (EO) 13888 is not an endorsement of the legality of the EO.
