Searfarer's Friend Needs Ship Visitors

Searfarer's Friend Needs Ship Visitors

Seafarer's Friend, a ministry that serves the men and women that work and live on the sea, is looking for volunteer ship visitors.  The organization, which has long had ties with the Massachusetts Conference, sent the following statement:

"We visit the ships that come into our ports in Boston and Salem, MA, and also in Portsmouth, NH and Portland, ME. We board the ships to meet with the crew from all different parts of the world.

"In essence our ministry fulfills the great commission, Matthew 28:19a: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.” The only difference is the nations come to our ports.

"With the tightened security regulations, more and more each day, fewer crew members are able to leave the ship when they are docked in our ports. More than ever, our ship visits are needed because we are the only face of humanity not having official security or business with the ships.  We are a neutral presence that listens and acts on behalf of the Seafarers, easing the stress and tension from unfair treatment, burdens of life at sea and the loneliness of not being with family when their support for their loved ones are needed.

"We serve these seafarers by offering them the essential spiritual, emotional and physical support to help them live a less burdened life at sea.

"We are needing more individuals to help in ship visiting. We are looking for individuals that have an interest and heart for this ministry. You will start out as a volunteer. You will assist and train with our chaplains until both you and the chaplain are comfortable and confident to ship visit on your own. From there we will work out hours for ship visiting and you will receive a stipend. After a period of time worked out with all parties and with the approval of management, you will be brought on board as a part-time employed ship visitor."
