People of all ages and all walks of life may experience suicidal thoughts and consider suicide as a solution for their suffering. When someone cares and is willing to ask questions the journey towards suicide may be interrupted, allowing time for intervention and treatment.
Clergy, lay leaders and faith communities walk alongside people who are suffering in many ways. This compassion is life-affirming and can provide hope. Through education, awareness and reducing the stigma of seeking help we can all work to prevent suicide and assist people in getting the help they need.
“QPR is an emergency mental health intervention for suicidal persons created in 1995 by Paul Quinnett. An abbreviation for Question, Persuade and Refer, the intent is also to identify and interrupt the crisis and direct that person to the proper care.
"Gatekeepers can be anyone, but include parents, friends, neighbors, teachers, ministers, doctors, nurses, office supervisors, squad leaders, foremen, police officers, advisors, caseworkers, firefighters, and many others who are strategically positioned to recognize and refer someone at risk of suicide."
