Thursdays, 7-8:15 PM ~ April 20 to May 25 ~ Zoom

In anticipation of Pride month, we invite you to celebrate our LGBTQIA2S+ siblings and reckon with the complicated history of the church and our sacred texts. This course is an opportunity to do this and to explore queerness, theology, and biblical witness in community.

In this six-week-long bible study, we will talk about different queer identities, challenging and affirming bible passages, and how faith and queerness cannot only coexist but inspire each other. The goal is to think beyond a posture of defense, question the stories we have inherited and experience the richness of queer perspectives.

This study is a collaboration between First Church Somerville, UCC and the SNEUCC and led by our Queer Justice Advocate, Michael Streib. The group is open for everyone, whether you openly identify as LGBTQIA2S+, you seek to be a caring ally, or you are at the beginning of this journey. Also, all are welcome no matter where they are on their faith journey: whether you are clergy or a layperson, whether you are passionate about your faith, are still exploring, or are just interested in the topic.

The group is capped at 30 people, so we ask that you register here in advance

Participants will receive a syllabus with the bible passages for each week. The structure of our sessions can vary from topic to topic and is also depending on the flow of the conversation. However, most times, we will follow a three-fold pattern: We will share our first impressions we had, reading the text, before moving into a presentation on historical contexts, interpretational history, and existing queer readings of these texts. We will close by combining the results of the two first rounds and trying to interpret the text through a queer theological lens.

All are welcome! We are excited to be on this path together.
