Good Friday: Engaging the Passion of Christ and the Environmental Crisis
The narrative of Good Friday holds within it the tensions of our human existence—the depths of our sin and the heights of God’s transforming love, our proclivity to turn toward violence and our capacity to act from compassion, our abuse of power for our own good and our ability to respond to God’s unrelenting call to use our power for the good of all God’s creation.
On this holy and terrible day, we will remember the last hours of Jesus’ life. Through this passion narrative, we will examine our present-day world, including our environmental crisis. Testimony from three nonprofits in our region, GreenRoots, Roots2Empower, and Groundworks, will bear witness to how we might find resurrection and new life, even in this valley of shadows.
This program was developed by Rev. Emma Brewer-Wallin, Minister for Environmental and Economic Justice, and Rev. Liz Garrigan-Byerly, ACM for the North Central Region. It will feature music by the Willie Sordillo Ensemble. It will be livestreamed on Facebook at 3:00 PM on April 15th and we invite congregations to organize a watch party. It will also be available for preview and download on April 1st.
Please have a small dish of water available for your use during the service.
This service is now available for churches to download and use in their own settings. Find it here.
