Cape Ann Slavery Project
Comes to the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church

On Wednesday, November 17th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm, the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church invites you to a presentation by the founders of the Cape Ann Slavery & Abolition Project, Rev. Janet Parsons & Rev. Susan Moran.

The presentation will share the forgotten histories of enslaved people, slave owners, sea captains and business owners involved in the slave trade on Cape Ann.

Slaves, or “servants for life” as they were often euphemistically called, were born, lived, worked, had children and died here. Cape Ann’s slave-owning, slave-trading history was largely omitted from narratives of our past. By telling these forgotten stories, we seek a reckoning with the past that is too often denied.

The gathering will be held in the Sacred Grove at the West Gloucester Trinitarian Congregational Church 488 Essex Ave. The Sacred Grove was renovated through a generous grant from the Southern New England Conference of the United Church of Christ, to address 2020’s twin pandemics of Racism & Covid-19. Marshmallows will be available for toasting in the fire pit. In case of inclement weather, we will meet in the Sanctuary.
