Jesus asks Cleopas and his fellow traveler on the road to Emmaus to tell him about their losses, even though he clearly knows what they are talking about. There is something in speaking about our losses with God and with each other that enables us to take control of them.

When we speak what we may think of as “unspeakable,” it enables us to own it. Owning how we feel, allows us to begin to comprehend what has happened and begin to see what the future may hold. Perhaps even a “new normal” might begin to emerge.

This webinar will focus on two things – first, refreshing our memory about how trauma and the losses chaplains have sustained over these past months can affect our brains and our hearts. And second, to provide an opportunity to reflect on what chaplains have been going through. By using a series of biblical stories, chaplains will be able to begin to understand the trauma they have been through and begin to process their losses.

Rev. Dr. Martha Jacobs, BCC ret. will present this webinar. Dr. Jacobs was appointed the Coordinator for UCC Disaster Ministries Chaplains beginning in 2007. She has led retreats, workshops and trainings for the UCC, assisting clergy following natural disasters and human-caused traumas, to help try to prevent clergy burnout. Subsequent to serving as a professional chaplain for 24 years, she accepted a call to be the Senior Minister at the First Congregational Church in Chappaqua, NY, where she has been since 2013.
