Job Description: Sexton (Custodian)
Position Overview:
The Sexton is responsible for keeping the buildings and grounds clean and well-maintained, in collaboration with the Assistant Sexton, Church and Campus Administrator, and volunteers.
Hours:
This position is for 15-17 hours per week. Eight of these hours will be at agreed-upon times (i.e., Mon, Wed, Thursday mornings), and seven hours will be flexible, based on needs of the church and availability of the sexton.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Regular (weekly or as needed) cleaning of all hallways, restrooms, Fellowship Halls, sanctuary, offices and classrooms.
- Minor repairs and miscellaneous maintenance items as necessary.
- Deep cleaning and special projects (annually, or as needed), including rug shampooing, power washing of buildings, window washing, etc.
- Purchase supplies periodically.
- Respond to emergencies, in collaboration with Assistant Sexton and volunteers.
- Alerting Facilities Management Team of major concerns arising.
- Setting up for periodic church events.
- Overseeing Assistant Sexton’s care for the grounds.
- Shoveling snow from emergency exits (walkways and parking lots are shoveled by plowing company).
Note: We anticipate the regular weekly cleaning duties to take approximately 8-10 hours per week, leaving 5-7 hours for contingencies (minor repairs, emergencies) and for periodic projects (washing windows, waxing floors, cleaning carpets, etc.). The sexton will meet quarterly with the Facilities Support Team and the Assistant Sexton for a walk-through of the campus to assess needs and develop priorities for special projects.
Job Requirements:
- Overall building maintenance skills.
- Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical and carpentry.
- Flexibility for emergency situations.
- Physical ability to do heavy work such as snow shoveling, moving tables, vacuuming, mopping.
Compensation:
Rate: Starting at $21/per hour
Part time hours: 15-17 hours per week
