Old South Union Church is a UCC congregation located at the heart of Weymouth and the South Shore of Massachusetts. We are a vibrant community of faith seeking a Sunday School Director to revitalize our Sunday School program. Our Sunday School Director provides overall leadership and guidance for a program that ministers to infants through 8th graders. They work with our pastors, members of the Board of Christian Education, and volunteers to nurture our church’s children as they grow in faith. A strong candidate will be creative, outgoing, organized, and collaborative with strong communication skills and the ability to work independently. The position is 10-12 hours/week for 44 weeks (mid-August through mid-June), and the compensation provided is $11,500/year.

Primary responsibilities for our Sunday School Director are:

1. Envisions and brings to life an engaging Sunday School program.
2. Leads the Sunday School program, ensuring that it runs smoothly and follows Safe Church Guidelines.
3. Partners with the Board of Christian Education to develop and maintain an age-appropriate curriculum.
4. Recruits Sunday School volunteers and equips them for their work by planning and leading a teacher orientation as well as periodic teacher meetings as needed throughout the year.
5. Orders and distributes Sunday School resource materials, equipment, and general supplies as approved by the Board of Christian Education.
6. Is present and prepared at 9:00 AM on Sunday mornings to greet families and support teachers, and remains until all children have been dismissed to their parents/guardians on Sunday mornings.
7. Ensures that all classrooms, the Christian Education Office, and the Christian Education Supply Room are in order both before and after Sunday School.
8. Creates and maintains a registration system for students, including a list of allergies and health alerts, that is clearly communicated to all Sunday School volunteers.
9. Maintains weekly attendance lists for each class and reaches out to families and students who may need further engagement.
10. Creates a list of substitutes and arranges for coverage when Sunday School volunteers are on vacation or ill.
11. Arranges for coverage in his/her own absence, with approval from the Board of Christian Education.
12. Maintains weekly communication with families about all facets of the Sunday School program.
13. Equips families with Christian education resources to deepen their faith practices at home.

1. Attends meetings of the Board of Christian Education and communicates monthly with the Chairperson to submit approval for major expenditures for curriculum, equipment and supplies that will be charged to the Christian Education budget.
2. Attends one ongoing education opportunity for Christian Educators per program year, paid for by the Board of Christian Education.
3. Works with the Board of Christian Education and in consultation with the Pastors, plans, schedules and leads special Sunday School programs (e.g. commissioning of Sunday School teachers, kindergarten and fourth grade Bible Sunday, Children’s Sunday, etc.).
4. Studies, evaluates, and presents new curriculum options to the Board of Christian Education for approval.
5. Submits a report for the annual report.

1. A background in education is preferred, and special training in Christian education is preferred
2. The ability to organize and prioritize work and meet deadlines
3. Strong verbal, written, organizational, interpersonal, and basic computer skills are required
4. Must be a self-starter with strong leadership skills and the ability to work respectfully with volunteers, staff members, and the congregation
