Job Description – Organist/Pianist
 
The music program is an integral part of the ministry, mood, community and spiritual life of Second Congregational Church of Boxford, in both music and lyrics. Second Church is an Open and Affirming (ONA) Congregation of the United Church of Christ (UCC) committed to widening the welcome.
 
Summary:
Under the leadership and direction of the Music Ministry Director and working in partnership with the Pastor of Second Congregational Church, the Organist will provide musical accompaniment and performance to enhance the congregation’s experience of worship, community and God. While being mindful of Second Church’s style and tradition of sacred music, music should be thoughtfully woven and integrated into worship theme, liturgy, scripture or text, honoring our commitment to inclusive language.
 
Responsibilities:
Collaborate with the Music Ministry Director and the Pastor to provide appropriate instrumental accompaniment (organ and/or piano) for regularly scheduled worship services and Senior Choir rehearsals. This includes but is not limited to:  choir anthems, congregational hymns, calls to worship, preludes, postludes, offertories, Holy Communion meditations and responsive music selections. Musical style, selections and performance are crucial to the various stages of the worship service, as they should reflect, enhance, and embellish the sanctity, prayer, spirituality, theme and mood in every service.   
 
Additionally, provide accompaniment for special services including but not limited to: Lenten Services (Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday), Christmas Services (Blue Christmas, Christmas Eve Services), 4 Mile Village, Ecumenical Services and other identified opportunities such as hymn sings etc. in an effort to engage more participation, fellowship and outreach.
 
Recommend for purchase, expand, organize, index, maintain and preserve our organ and piano sheet music library. Ensure that music falls within the appropriate copyright regulations and laws.
 
Partner with the Music Ministry Director to identify and implement:
 

  • Opportunities to provide a wide variety of musical offerings utilizing congregational talents including:  junior choir, bell choir(s), instrumental solos and inclusion in hymn and anthem offerings.
  • Opportunities for building community through music, inside and outside our doors, in accordance with our Open Hearts, Open Minds, and Open Doors spiritual directive.
  • Create Sub listing for back up Instrumentalists to cover weddings, funerals and absences.  
 
With the support on the Music Committee, communicate, recommend, coordinate and schedule timely and proactive tuning and maintenance of our 1889 Woodberry and Harris Tracker Organ, and Yamaha Grand Piano.
 
Be available (if possible) to provide music for funerals and weddings in accordance with standard practices of Second Congregational Church.
 
Provide/Communicate Sunday Worship music selections to the Church Office no later than Wednesday at Noon for bulletin printing.  The deadlines for any additional special services will be provided by the Church Office.   
 
Participate in meetings of the Music Committee as Ex-Officio Member.
 
The Organist reports directly to the Music Ministry Director and Pastor under the responsibility of the Diaconate and serves on music committee.
 
Schedule and Calendar:
Traditional Morning Worship (held in the Church Sanctuary) runs from the Sunday following Labor Day thru the 2nd Sunday in June.
 
There are no requirements during the 12 weeks of Summer Garden Worship.
 
Compensation Note
Weddings, Memorial Services & Funerals falls outside of Second Church salary however follows church guidelines.
