Interim Music Director, Newton, MA

Interim Music Director, Newton, MA

The Interim Music Director is the coordinator, conductor and consultant for hymns, anthems, and other choral offerings for congregational Sunday, holiday and special event worship at NHCC.  From time to time the Director coordinates with children’s choirs, or special youth musical offerings.  This is a decision-making position at the intersection of artistic ability, professional knowledge and faithful, collegial choices. Our Director engages seasonal needs in worship, as well coordinating with colleagues such as the pastor, organist, section leaders, soloists and special musicians (i.e. for Easter and Christmas).  The Interim Music Director forms and re-forms the Senior Choir and is present for rehearsals (traditionally Wednesday evenings and before worship ~ 8:45 am Sundays, or as needed for special services including some memorials), and for morning worship:  10 am Sundays.  In covid times, this leader will need to be flexible in case we go online, pre-record, or develop other technological offerings.
We imagine this position to last between 6 - 10 months, and the candidate could be considered for the settled spot.
Compensation is yet to be finalized, but will be over $300/week.
We have a super-excellent organist, who is an accomplished piano player as well, comfortable in many styles, although in general Sunday mornings are "classical" as well as formal.  But since our theology is progressive, that comes to bear as well.
(Our organ is Hook & Hastings with a generous 6-figure restoration recently, and our Piano is a five year old Yamaha C7X.)

This position requires 6-10 hours/week, adjusted by our liturgical calendar.  It comes with 3 paid weekends per year for vacation.

NHCC is an Open and Affirming, Still-Speaking congregation of the United Church of Christ;  it is a progressive, mission-conscious congregation. Our spirit of collegial work in ministry and joyful engagement between lay and staff colleagues are always at our heart, as is our commitment to serve God and God's people.

While we know what we like in music, we see this interim period as a time to explore a bit and learn new styles as well.  Our last Director did not leave us for another church.  He just always wanted to live in Manhattan, and now he does.  Sigh and yay.  But we can't wait to meet you, too.
