We are looking for an enthusiastic leader to help guide our youngest flock. Join Central Congregational Church staff as the Director of Religious Education to lead our well established youth program with a team of engaged and supportive religious leaders and parent volunteers. We need someone who can work with other staff members to foster and maintain a working environment where worship, prayer and learning are the primary motivators. The Director of Religious Education should have a clear understanding of faith and the theology of the United Church of Christ to assist adults and youth of the Church in the formation of their faith.

The Director of Religious Education should have a clear understanding of faith and the theology of the United Church of Christ to assist adults and youth of the Church in the formation of their faith.
 
Reports to:  Senior Minister
Job Type:  Part-time 20 hours per week
Key Relationships and Collaborations: Clergy, Staff, Committee Chairs, Members


The responsibilities of the Director of Religious Education include, but are not limited to:
Organizational

  • Schedules and oversees religious education program for  children ages 3-13, including Vacation Bible School each summer..
  • Assists teachers by evaluating lessons, suggesting improvements, scheduling classes and providing training.
  • Prepares and schedules programs, events and worship services for students and their parents.
  • Orders books, teaching materials and resources for the program. 
  • Prepares a yearly calendar of events and facilitates all youth events including Fellowship evenings, Children’s Christmas pageant, Easter egg Hunt, end of year picnic, etc.
  • Prepares weekly bulletin for children’s worship.
  • Leading/organizing Cherub Choir (5-7 year olds), incorporating music into Gathering Times
     Supervisory
  • Oversees the Church School program staff including hiring childcare, finding substitutes and assisting teachers when necessary.
      Communications
  • Prepares monthly Church School article for Newsletter.
  • Updates website and Facebook with important information and outreach regarding Church School.
  • Communicates regularly with parents via e-mail, texts, calls, etc. to keep them up to date on what is happening in the Church School.
  • Attends weekly staff meetings and monthly Religious Education Committee meetings to provide updates regarding Church School program.
  • Maintains a presence and collaborates with other DREs of the United Church of Christ Southern New England Conference.

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills especially with families, parents and young children
  • Excellent verbal, written, and organizational skills, including social media
  • Detail-oriented
  • Strong sense of discretion and confidentiality
  • Ability to prioritize and balance multiple projects
  • Compassionate, flexible and creative, entrepreneurial
  • Ability to find new ways to welcome families to CCC
