Christian Education Director Overview:
Park Avenue Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, an Open and Affirming, 200-member congregation in Arlington, Massachusetts (regular Sunday attendance between 80-100), seeks an experienced part-time Christian Education (CE) Director.  At the heart of what PACC offers is a warm welcome and a sense of belonging to all who come through our doors. All of the duties described below ultimately work toward this goal: cultivating a positive, nurturing, healthy relationship with children, youth, and their families so that church becomes a place where they feel loved, valued, and nurtured on their faith journeys. The CE Director will be responsible for the Sunday School Program and the Christian Education Ministry, in consultation with the pastor.

Job Duties and Essential Functions:
  • Sunday School planning, administration and oversight:
    • Develop and oversee the Sunday School Curriculum in cooperation with the Pastor and Christian Education Ministry deacon; order curriculum
○ Plan weekly lessons and assemble materials for all Sunday School classes
○ Recruit and provide training and support of Sunday School volunteers (teachers and assistants) as well as nursery care volunteers.
■ Follow safe-church policy (obtain references, national background check)
  • Youth fellowship, service, and faith
    • Creatively re-envision (and then coordinate) our youth program to engage more of our teenagers in spiritual growth, service, and fellowship.
○ With the Pastor, help plan and lead Confirmation, generally every other year
  • Sunday services, special services, and church events
    • Recruit and provide regular training and support for acolytes (weekly September, - June) and youth liturgists and ushers (first Sunday of the month).
○ Work with Youth Music Director to plan and prepare for Christmas pageant and Youth Sunday
○ Provide child-friendly activities when children are present for the entire worship service (e.g. Easter, Christmas Eve)
○ Organize Easter egg hunt; cake for early Christmas Eve service
○ (Potential) All Ages Together worship time: the Pastor currently leads this child-friendly moment during worship but would welcome collaboration
○ (Potential) Adult Education: The pastor currently leads adult education offerings but would welcome collaboration, particularly re: offerings for parents of children and youth
  • Overall administrative and budgetary responsibilities:
    • Cultivate a positive, nurturing, and healthy relationship with children and youth and their families
○ Co-develop (with CE Deacon) a requested budget, and work within the allocated budget, and keep accurate financial   records
○ Recruit and organize childcare for special services, all-church meetings (e.g., Annual Meeting), and occasional programmatic offerings geared toward parents
○ Coordinate childcare for pastor’s two young children before and after worship
○ Write articles as appropriate for the Spire (church newsletter); prepare brief (written and verbal) monthly updates to the Council of Deacons
○ Prepare for and attend regular church meetings, including:
■ Monthly Council of Deacons meetings
■ Monthly staff meetings
■ Convene (with CE Deacon) and meet with CE working group as needed (approximately quarterly)

General requirements:  Applicants for the position should have a commitment to progressive Christian faith; ability to work with youth and children and concern for nurturing them; strong listening skills, a desire to collaborate, and sincere interest in others.  Applicants should be familiar with and comfortable working in a church environment, demonstrate strong organizational skills, have strong written and oral communication skills, be punctual, takes initiative, be flexible, possess strong follow-through skills, have discretion and the ability to maintain complete confidentiality of sensitive information, and have excellent interpersonal and relationship-building skills with diverse individuals (age, race/ethnicity, prior religious background, gender, sexual orientation, disability status, etc.), including a positive attitude, sense of humor, and pleasant personality.

Academic and work experience requirements: College degree or equivalent work-related experience, and ideally 3–5 years experience working with children, especially in a religious or similar nonprofit setting.
Technical skills: Curriculum planning for children and youth ages pre-school through teen; Organizational / project management skills (e.g., for organizing teachers and assistants, curriculum, acolytes and youth liturgists)
Physical requirements: Moderate lifting (25 pounds) and the ability to negotiate stairs.

Job location and hours:
Principal work location is 50 Paul Revere Road in Arlington, Massachusetts.
Required hours are approximately 20-25 hours per week, September to June, and 10-15 hours per week in the summer months.  Attendance is required at the monthly evening meeting of the Council of Deacons (approximately 2 hours/month).

Primary supervision is by the pastor and Christian Education Ministry deacon.  Job performance is reviewed annually.

The position is salaried (50% FTE) and includes paid vacation and sick leave.  Other benefits may be negotiable.
