Stand for Love on April 4th

Stand for Love on April 4th

April 3- 5, 2018

April 4, 2018 will mark the 50th anniversary of the assassination of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The National Council of Churches will take this opportunity of commemoration to launch a multi-year effort committed to addressing racism in our country.

The Massachusetts Conference has also been committed to unmasking and eradicating racism in our lives and in our churches. We are proud and excited to be a part of this ecumenical movement to acknowledge the role Christianity in this country has played in both fighting and upholding the institution of racism. The time has come to intentionally name the evil of racism in the United States, to see and repent for our part as the Christian Church in its perpetuation, and to join together as disciples of Jesus to end its insidious influence on this country.

From the Act Now! website: “The time is now! The National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA (NCC) and our partners are committed to eradicating the entrenched racism that grips the United States and paralyzes our ability to see every human being as equal. Together, we confront this systemic evil in which Christians and church institutions and policies are complicit and complacent in addressing this global problem. We challenge ourselves and our communities to join in truth-telling leading to actions that right the wrongs, and, with God’s grace, bring healing and wholeness to all people, and unity to the nation.
Our commitment is to awaken to the trauma of racism and the legacy of white privilege in the United States through self-evaluation and institutional assessment of embedded racism; to confront racism and white privilege through disciplined truth-telling coupled with strategies in the areas of church life and practices, criminal justice, economic justice, social justice, media, civil and human rights, environmental justice, education; and thus transform the hearts, minds, and behaviors of people and institutions.”

We encourage all those called to stand for love and to stand up against hate to join us in Washington DC on April 4th for a day of action, liturgy and prayer to launch this multi-year, multi-denominational effort. If you are able consider coming the 3rd through the 5th for more actions, lobbying and events. You can sign up for the regular updates and information on the Act Now! website In the coming days we will have a registration form on our own Massachusetts Conference website to begin organizing buses for those who wish to go down and back on April 4th.

“Join in the clarion call to heal the soul of the nation as we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Dr. King’s assassination. Let’s finish the work!”
