Are you a delegate? Are you a United Church of Christ Authorized Minister here in Rhode Island? Are you a member of the Board of Directors or on a Committee of the Board? Are you a member of a RI Conference UCC church? Do you have an interest in the RI Conference of the United Church of Christ? Are you concerned about or curious about what White Privilege is all about?
Then this Autumnal Meeting is for you!
Our Autumnal Meeting will happen on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at the Beneficent Congregational Church UCC located at 300 Weybosset Street in Providence. Please register in advance so we can plan for your presence. Please plan to carpool with other members of your church or the pastor. Look for parking attendants who will direct you where to park.
Both breakfast and lunch will be served - arrive anytime between 7:30 am and 8:30 am so you can enjoy coffee and breakfast, check out the many displays (perhaps buy a book or learn about a service opportunity), and chat with others from around Rhode Island. There will be a meeting for new delegates at 8 am. We come together in the Meeting House for a hymn sing at 8:45 am. For more details on the Agenda for the day click here.
At 9 am there will be a brief business meeting. Three votes will be taken:
1. Conference Guidelines for 2017 for Church staff and Authorized Ministry (click here to see the proposed guidelines)
2. An Open and Affirming Resolution to decide whether the RI Conference will become an Open and Affirming Conference (click here to see the proposed resolution)
At 9:30 am we will hear a keynote address on "Wading into White Privilege - What's to stop us!" with the Rev. Alison Buttrick Patton, Senior Pastor of the Saugatuck Congregational Church in Westport, CT. There will be time for both interaction and conversation during this address. Rev. Patton will also preach at worship (11:45 am) where communion will be served.
There will also be Speak outs at this Autumnal meeting - brought back by public demand! Anyone who wishes to speak for one minute will be invited to sign up at the start of the day with the Clerk. If you or your church has something to celebrate, plan to offer a Speak out! If you have a particular interest that you want to raise to the gathered body, then plan to offer a Speak out! If you have a personal testimony to share, then plan to Speak out! Your time will be limited to one minute!
Hope to see you all there!!
