Five Hartford area congregations of the United Church of Christ are jointly petitioning the Connecticut legislature and the governor to adopt a $15 per hour minimum wage for CT. To date, Immanuel Congregational Church, Faith Congregational Church, Asylum Hill Congregational Church, Center Church, and First Congregational Church of East Hartford have gathered over 250 signatures. The churches plan to give the petition in late December to Hartford area legislators.
The petition drive for a $15 wage was inspired by recent changes in the minimum wage to $15 per hour in New York, California, and Massachusetts. Following actions in those states, the CT Conference of the UCC adopted a resolution in June 2016 calling for a $15 wage. CT Conference Minister, the Rev. Kent Siladi wrote an op-ed in the December 4, 2016 issue of the Courant explaining why the CT Conference was calling for a $15 wage.
Other Connecticut UCC congregations are invited to conduct their own petitions. Ideally, the petitions should be given to legislators no later than February 15, 2017.
