In 2009, I was contracted by Rev. Da Vita McAllister at the historic Connecticut Conference to help organize the New England Regional Youth Event at Boston University. In 2011, I joined the CTUCC staff in a part-time capacity, and then expanded my role to become the Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries in 2015. One joy in this work is administering the Thinking About Working For God program to help youth consider vocation and call.
For those working in youth ministry, I recommend Mark DeVries’ Sustainable Youth Ministry, especially his reminder to develop a team approach. The Yale Youth Ministry Institute has a wealth of resources, to equip teens as well as teams engaged in the ministry.
As we move into the new year, I will continue my focus on youth ministry, not only to provide leadership opportunities for young people, but also to resource the adults who nurture them in faith. I am excited about Youth @ Synod coming up in July. Wider church experiences can be powerful for young people as they begin to dig into justice issues and practice advocacy. Though this event will be offered virtually, it promises to be a great opportunity for our UCC youth to network with one another.
