Spending this sunny holiday in an exhibition hall seems cruel and unusual, yet participating in Synod 28 on this day has me celebrating freedom of religion and speech.
I'm heartened by the boldness of all who speak out on issues and appreciate especially the boldness of those who voice positions that run against what one might expect to be the opinion of the vast majority. As much as parliamentary procedure can hobble discussion, it has a beauty all of its own by creating opportunities for different voices to be heard. If the ancient Greek city states birthed democracy, our congregational polity and procedures continue this great tradition in an incredibly vital way.
Our core value that everyone is welcome no matter who they are or where they are on life's journey is evidenced in the many voices that have spoken up. I am more certain than ever that this rainbow church is paving the way for God to speak to us and through us.
