Asking a simple question

Asking a simple question

Share

Yesterday I received an invitation to take 5 minutes to contact my elected congressional representative to ask a simple question: “Do you support ending subsidies to the fossil fuel industry?”  Our friend Bill McKibben’s organization - 350.org – has done all the preparation work.  To join me, just click here: http://endfossilfuelsubsidies.org/scoreboard/  and enter your zip code.  You’ll  see your 2 senators and congress person, how to contact them by email or phone, and how much money each of them has received from the fossil fuel industry.  If you want to phone his/her office, a suggested script is provided.  You then have an opportunity to record how the congress person (or their staffer) responded to the simple question: “Do you support ending subsidies to the fossil fuel industry?”

It’s likely that the response will be something like, “I’ll get back to you.”  So please express a firm expectation that you hear from them no later than June 19th.

350.org reports that during the last two years, the fossil fuel industry spent almost $350 million lobbying the current Congress. And for every dollar the fossil fuel industry spent, they got nearly $59 back in handouts and subsidies. That’s a 5800% return!!

Please join me in asking a simple question so that the American public can know where their elected officials stand in relation to the ongoing fossil fuel subsidies.
