Barbara's Blurb for Thanksgiving Week

Barbara's Blurb for Thanksgiving Week

In the words of the familiar Thanksgiving hymn, “Come, O thankful people, come, raise the song of harvest home; all is safely gathered in, as the winter storms begin; God our Maker does provide for our wants to be supplied; come to God’s own temple, come, raise the song of harvest home.”

However, it is clear that this week has been and will be full of ups and downs... Even as we approach this Thursday's National Holiday of Thanksgiving we know that there are those for whom this day will be fraught with not enough to eat, no warm place to be, no family or friends to share the day with... For many this Thursday may be the first holiday when someone will not be at the table... For others it will be a day when the will power not to use, not to drink, not to overindulge will make it difficult and challenging... We know that for our men and women in the military serving in faraway places this Thursday may be filled with longing and sadness... For others Thursday will be another day of work – let us not forget those who will work this holiday - in hospitals, as home health care aids, in restaurants, as well as those who serve at various stores that will be open... Of course none of us can forget the images and ongoing response to the verdict from the grand jury decision this week in Ferguson, Missouri…

Take time this Thanksgiving to give thanks to God - for all that we have and for the many blessings in our lives. And let us also pray for all who suffer from racism and injustice and for the multitude of places in the world where warfare and bloodshed continue... Let us continue to pray for justice and peace to prevail around this spaceship earth this week. Blessed Thanksgiving to everyone!

Blessings to all
