Day Two Synod is demanding! After finishing worship at 10 PM on Friday night, breakfast with the Massachusetts delegation began at 6:30 this morning! I woke up and splashed through the heavy rain to breakfast and then onto the second plenary. Our keynote speaker for this session was syndicated columnist Connie Shultz, a UCC member and wife of Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH). She spoke about the UCC’s prophetic ministries on race and sexuality. She started her talk noting that it was pouring rain outside but that she saw rainbows!
The morning program celebrated our denomination’s pioneering stands on gay rights. I appreciated my husband’s Facebook post during the program: “Thursday, Tracy and I woke up in a state that recognized our marriage (Massachusetts) and went to sleep in a state that did not recognize our marriage (Ohio). Yesterday, we woke up in a state that did not recognize our marriage and went to sleep in one that did (both Ohio). Thank you Supreme Court!!”
Our kids had a fantastic time in the daycare program today offered at the Synod. During the lunch break, we all went to the Great Lakes Science Center across from the Convention Center and had fun exploring the great exhibits. After an afternoon workshop focused on the Middle East, I headed back to our room to collapse.
