Bottom Line: Maintain Your Health - Mind, Body, and Spirit

As we all focus on trying to prevent the spread of COVID 19, caring for our general health and well-being is sometimes neglected. Mental health concerns, chronic disease management and preventive healthcare needs to continue safely. Emergent medical issues still need to be addressed. Video chat and telemedicine visits can be very effective for many conditions. Here are some tips for maintaining general health mind, body and spirit.

People are more at risk for mental health concerns due to the pandemic. Isolation, loss, grief and anxiety about income, protecting vulnerable people, keeping in touch, staying safe, and many other concerns are a heavy burden on our society.

Now more than ever it is critical to be kind and accepting of people who are experiencing mental health issues such as anxiety, fear, depression, and more in response to the pandemic. We can follow Jesus and love our neighbor as ourselves! One way we can help is to be W.I. S.E.

Body: Take Care of your General Health Too!

Our thoughts and daily activities are focused on infection prevention to avoid getting or spreading coronavirus. It is important to attend to our general health needs too. Doing our best to eat a healthy variety of foods including fruits and vegetables, staying hydrated, getting some exercise, and taking our regular medications will keep us healthy for the future.

Keep in touch with your healthcare provider. Video or telehealth visits provide a good way for chronic or common medical concerns to be addressed. Delaying preventative care, vaccinations, or laboratory tests can have negative consequences. Health care providers' labs, clinics and hospitals are following guidelines to increase infection control practices to keep everyone safe. If you have a medical emergency, do not delay, call 911 or go to the nearest Emergency room. Stay safe, stay well!

Non-COVID 19 Adult Medical Emergencies

  • People experiencing medical emergencies, or urgent health related concerns should still contact their healthcare provider, call 911, or go to the nearest emergency room.
  • Delaying treatment for urgent health care needs has the potential to create more harm and even death.
  • Hospitals and clinics are following guidelines for screening and isolation
Emergent symptoms can include, among other things:
  • Choking
  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent severe vomiting or diarrhea
  • Coughing or throwing up blood
  • Passing out or fainting
  • Cardiac arrest or stopped breathing
  • Severe chest pain or pressure
  • Sudden weakness on one side of the body
  • Broken bones, especially if pushing through the skin
  • Heavy bleeding, deep wounds or severe burns
  • Severe allergic reaction with swelling and trouble breathing
  • Accidental poisoning or overdose
  • Electrical shock
  • Head injury with fainting or confusion
  • Neck or spine injury with a loss of feeling or movement
  • Suicidal ideation and intentions
  • Seizures
Physical distancing, wearing masks, washing our hands and cleaning surfaces goes a long way toward preventing infection and maintaining our health. There are still times when a healthcare provider needs to be consulted; don’t delay care out of fear.  Love yourself, make a call, and stay healthy.


Pay attention to your emotions. Acknowledge how you feel. The pandemic is hard. Give yourself a break when you need one. Reach out to a loved one, friend or pastor when you need to talk. Take time in prayer or meditation. Walk in nature, sing or listen to music. Remember you are a beloved child of God.
